DEFENDING SESSIONS
BOXED

DEFENDING THE ITALIAN WAY
Session Description
Again another opportunity to develop individual defending skills within 1v1 moments. In this session each team has possession of a ball in a 1v1. The players in possession can only break out from the opposite end of the box. The defenders are looking to isolate the opponent and prevent them attacking through that gap. If one of the defenders is able to win possession they can join their team mate on the opposite side to create a 2v1.
This will challenge players to be the first to win possession back and then benefit in the attacking sense by getting forward and overloading the opponent. This practice can be highly transitional and challenging for defenders to recognise when to delay and when to press.
USING THE TOUCHLINE
It is important to recognise when defending that you can create a 2v1 without a team-mate, how can you do this? By pushing the opponent into the wide area and then using the touchline as an additional defender that can force the opponent into an area where only one decision is possible.
Challenging players to constantly think with this mindset will be a very important technical challenge. Again, this will involve positive use of their body to show the the opponent away from goal and towards the wide area, this will involve the direction of their hips and the angle of their body as the drive into the 1v1.
ATTACKING INTENT
When the ball is one back, how quickly can our defenders transition into the attack half and support their team-mate. This is important, even within a defending session. We must ensure we always play with the intent to attack, and must recognise the opportunity to go forwards.
Session Aims
Session Aim 1
Understand the importance of body position, how does your body position influence the player you are playing against and how can you your body to dominate those moments.
Session Aim 2
Can we encourage players to force the opponents wide away from the centre of the pitch. The wider we are able to push the opponent the less chance of scoring
Individual Aim
Focusing on using full-backs and encourage them to try and dominate 1v1 moments against a variety of attacking players.
